Babos survives first set scare

Australian Open junior first round results as they happenGirls top seed Timea Babos survived losing the first set against Pole Sandra Zaniewska 6-1 to reach the third round of the Australian Open Junior tournament. Boys top seed Daniel Berta made it easier for himself, taking out New Zealander Barrett Franks in straight sets. The girls tournament lost 3 seeded players, 7th seed Nastja Kolar, 9th seed Sachie Ishizu and 12th seed Jana Cepelova. In the boys tournament 5th seed Liang-Chi Huang, 8th seed Dominik Schulz and 16th seed Jozef Kovalik bit the dust in the second round.

Thiem and Mestach win Colombian titlesBelgian An Sophie Mestach continued a very successful run in the COSAT junior tennis circuit by winning her second Grade 1 in the series in Colombia. She was joined in the winners circle by surprising boys 7th seed Dominic Thiem of Austria, who overcame unseeded Paraguayan Diego Galeano in the final.

Berta slips into Australian Open second round

Daniel Berta after his Roland Garros successBoys top seed Daniel Berta (photo, right) had to struggle to overcome his Australian opponent, Jarryd Chaplin, in the first round of the Australian Open Junior tournament. Berta only managed to find the breakthrough at 6-6 in the final set to overcome the spirited display of Chaplin. Chaplin's compatiot Benjamin Mitchell managed to carry his form from the Traralgon International into this tournament, easily overcoming 15th seed Henri Laaksonen. The girls tournament also lost its 15th seed in Chinese Saisai Zheng and 8th seeded Chilean Camila Silva was also surprised in the first round.
