The first set was an even contest between Rufin and Smethurst, with Rufin only managing to make the difference in the latter stages for a 7-5 first set win. In the second set Rufin again showed his prowess on grass, easily putting away his opponent 6-2 in the second set for the title. The added 150 points to Rufin’s total will help the Frenchman to most probably reach a career-high ranking of 14 and the added bonus of elevating himself to the status of one of the favorites for the title at Wimbledon.

After Melanie Oudin suffered a surprise 7-5 first set loss against Brit youngster Laura Robson, an upset seemed to be on the cards. The top seeded American straightened her back, however, and showed the dominant form that had brought her to the final, 6-2 in the second and third set. The points gained from this title actually has no bearing on the point total of the American,  but will give her a major shot of confidence going into Wimbledon. That one of her biggest challengers for the number 1 spot, Dutch girl Arantxa Rus, went out early can also be seen as a confidence booster.
