Yang makes history at Roland Garros Juniors

ImageTaiwanese native Tsung-Hua Yang became the first player from his country to capture a Junior Grandslam title when he defeated 12th seed Jerzy Janowicz in the final of the Roland Garros Junior tournament. The title in the girls tournament went to Simona Halep, who became the first Romanian girl to win the Junior tournament at Roland Garros. Yang, who fell just short of taking the title at the Australian Open, played the final like a man on a mission. In the first set he broke Janowicz at the first opportunity and never looked back, only facing one breakpoint with the help of his mammoth serve. The first set went to Yang 6-3.

In the second set Janowicz finally managed to get a grip on Yang’s serve, breaking him 2 times in a row for a 5-0 lead. But as has been the case many times in this tournament, Yang managed to resurrect his game and raced right back to 5-5 with 2 breaks of his own. Both players then relied on their serves to get into the tie-break. In the tie-break both players held on to their serves time after time, showing their mental strength. Because Janowicz had started serving, it was Yang who got his first chance to win the tournament at 6-5. The 17-year old was not to be denied and made the telling mini-break for the title of the Roland Garros Junior tournament.

ImageAs the first player from Taiwan to win a Junior Grand Slam, Yang catapults himself into the limelight from a status of also-ran to champion. Points gained with this victory will help Yang move into 3rd position in the Junior rankings, just behind the player who defeated him in the final of the Australian Open, Bernard Tomic. Consequentially, it seems like both players will be counted as the two biggest favorites in the Junior Grand Slam that’s in the close future: Wimbledon. Runner-up Jerzy Janowicz will also be considered a dark horse for that title, with his commanding serve and pounding groundstrokes. The Polish number 1 will now, more than ever, be motivated to make up for his 2 losses in Junior Grand Slam finals.

As had been the case in her match against Lenka Jurikova, Elena Bogdan started off in a rush against Simona Halep, breaking Halep twice, compared to losing only one break. Bogdan’s 3-1 lead quickly crumbled, however, allowing Halep back into it at 3-3. Both players held serve until 5-4, when Bogdan had to serve to save the set. Halep continued to put pressure on her younger compatriot and friend, but Bogdan saved setpoint after setpoint. Only at the 4th attempt Halep found the breakthrough she needed for a 6-4 first set win.

An early break in the second set for Halep at 2-1 up all but sealed the match, as the Junior form player of the moment raced to a 4-1 lead. Halep held on to her lead until 5-3, where she got a chance to serve out the match for the title. Halep never even caught sight of the finish line, though, as Bogdan broke her to love. In Bogdan’s following servicegame Halep righted her back and forced herself 2 matchpoints. Again Bogdan fought back, needing 3 gamepoints to come back to 5-5. Both players then swapped breaks to reach the tie-break. The tie-break was equally matched until 2-2, after which Bogdan completely took over command of the match, allowing her opponent only one more point on her way to a 7-3 tie-break victory.

ImageIn the final set Halep grabbed an early break at her third attempt and basically sealed the match from there, breaking another 2 times on Bogdan’s serve and only getting broken once herself. The final set went to Halep 6-2. The title will propel Halep to the number 1 Junior position, overtaking Urszula Radwanska, who will be dropping off top spot into 4th position. Halep also made herself a strong contender for becoming the first Junior World Champion from her country, but will still face stiff competition from the Junior numbers 2 and 3, Melanie Oudin and Arantxa Rus.
