Frenchman Guillaume Rufin and Romanian Elena Bogdan crowned themselves this the European Junior Champions of this year after winning their respective finals. Rufin defeated top seed Henri Kontinen in the boys final and Bogdan defeated 14th seeded Frenchgirl Cindy Chala. Rufin looked like he was ready win a grandslam at Wimbledon when he won both the Gerry Weber Junior Open and Roehampton, but fell tragically short in his second round against Brit Daniel Evans. In this tournament Rufin showed that this loss didn’t diminish his confidence, winning all of his matches on his way to the title in straight sets. The only player to lose by only one break in each set was top seed Henri Kontinen in the final. Rufin’s title will help him climb into the top 10 and show that he’s still a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming US Open. Elena Bogdan’s run to the title was even more impressive, losing only 28 games in 6 matches, an average of a little less than 5 per match. Bogdan’s opponent in the final, 14th seed Cindy Chala, only had a chance in the first set, which Bogdan won 6-4. In the second set Bogdan wasn’t to be stopped anymore, romping to a simple 6-4 6-2 victory. In a breakthrough year for Bogdan, it’s another jewel on the crown of a fast-rising talent, who will be a major title threat at the upcoming US Open. Bogdan will gain one position with this title, overtaking Laura Robson for a career-high 5th position in the ITF Junior rankings.
