Junior watch US Open: Wozniacki pushes Jankovic
Monday, 01 September 2008

Seeded 21st at the US Open, 18-year old Dane Caroline Wozniacki made a good account of herself against 2nd seed Jelena Jankovic. Wozniacki was even on top for at least 1 set and the start of the second, but in the end it was Jankovic who managed to hold firm in the windy circumstances, winning in 3 sets.

In the first set Wozniacki dominated the set with some solid and powerful play and taking advantage of a couple of double faults by her opponent at crucial times, wrapping it up 6-3.

With the wind picking up, Wozniacki found it harder and harder to deal with the circumstances. The young Dane started hitting more and more unforced errors, with Jankovic taking full advantage for a 6-2 win in the second set.

The 4th game in the final set proved decisive, when Wozniacki had to hold serve at 2-1 down but committed some crucial unforced errors, dumping the ball into the net and hitting it outside the lines. The break was the end of the match for Wozniacki, as Jankovic raced off with the final set: 6-1. Jankovic will now go on to play 29th seed Sybille Bammer for a spot in the semifinals.

Fourth round women's singles result:

Jelena Jankovic (SRB,2) d. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN,21) 3-6 6-2 6-1
