17-year old Frenchman Julien Obry captured himself a precious first Grade 1-title by defeating Italian Federico Gaio in the final of the Traralgon International. Obry was rarely troubled by his opponent, ending up victorious 6-4 6-1.
Obry achieved his most significant result before the Traralgon by the end of last year, losing in the quarterfinals to eventual Orange Bowl winner Yuki Bhambri. The Frenchman played two Junior Grand Slams, Roland Garros and the US Open, and failed to reach past the first round on both occasions. The only Junior title that Obry won last year was a Grade 3 tournament in Tunisia. In this tournament Obry faced his toughest opponents in the first round and the semifinal. Against German Sebastian Fanselow Obry survived a second set scare, while the Frenchman recovered from a first set loss in his semifinal against Swede Daniel Berta. This title moves Obry up the rankings, past countryman Adrien Puget, into the top 20. Runner-up Federico Gaio rises into the top 50. Final boys result Traralgon International: Julien Obry (FRA,7) d.
