Spaniard Pablo Carreno and Ukrainian Nadiya Kichenok were the surprising winners of the Nottinghill International after winning their respective finals. Carreno defeated unseeded Dutchman Eleveld in a tight final and Kichenok did the same against 8th seed Yana Buchina.
The Spaniard, who was a relative unknown before the tournament, took his chance to step into the limelight with both hands. Unseeded surprise package Justin Eleveld of the Netherlands managed to stay toe-to-toe with the Spaniard for 2 sets, but when it really mattered it was the Spaniard who was able to up his game to take home the title. On his way to the title Carreno did not encounter a single seed, but did beat some considerable talents like Finn Henri Laaksonen and Frenchman Julien Obry. The Spaniard definitely elevates himself to one of the favorites for the Australian Open Junior title and also boosted his ranking into the Junior top 10. Runner-up Eleveld rises into the top 50 and makes himself a dangerous floater in the upcoming Australian Open Junior tournament. Girls winner Nadiya Kichenok had to fight very hard to secure her first Grade 1-title against Russian Yana Buchina, but was good value for it in the end. Especially in the first 3 rounds Kichenok had to fight hard for her victories, but showed her grit and determination by coming through in three sets. It was her easy victory in the semifinals against 2nd seed Elena Bogdan that raised the most eyebrows, though, because this win confirmed the steady improvement that the young Ukrainian seems to have made. Kichenok’s victory suddenly elevates her into a dangerous outsider for the Australian Open, as well as upping her ranking into the top 20, most likely 16th position. Runner-up Yana Buchina also gives her ranking a slight boost, going from just outside the top 20 to just inside the top 20. Final boys draw Nottinghill International: Pablo Carreno (ESP,4) d.
