| Tired Robson out of Trofeo Bonfiglio |
| Sunday, 24 May 2009 | |
A tired-looking Laura Robson, mentally as well as physically, lost surprisingly to unseeded American Sloane Stephens. The British youngster was outplayed by a patient and solid Stephens, who deservedly booked her spot in the semifinals. The 16-year old American then went on to take the last seeded player out of the running, her 15th seeded compatriot Christina McHale. In the final of the Trofeo Bonfiglio Stephens will be facing off with Serbian Aleksandra Krunic, who took Russian Ksenia Kirillova out of the running. Both girls are nothing short of stunning finalists, very few would have predicted these two players to be facing off in the finals. Stephens due to a lack of competitive claycourt tournaments and Krunic because she recently suffered early exits in France and Italy. Both players are deserving of their spots in the final, however, both having defeated some established names. Krunic took down 3rd seed Tomljanovic, Stephens ousted top seed Laura Robson. Whoever wins the final remains up in the air, since, just like the tournament, this could go any which way. In the boys tournament the last seed was also taking out in the semifinals. Local hope Federico Gaio could not have pleased his compatriots more when he took care of business against 4th seeded Argentinian Andrea Collarini. Gaio needed two tie-break to upset the Argentinian and book himself a place in the final where he will face another Argentinian. Facundo Arguello clearly profited from the early loss of all the seeded players in the bottom half of the draw and wasted little time in reaching the final. Arguello defeated Brazilian Guilherme Clezar 6-2 6-2, to reach the first Grade A final of his Junior career. Both players do have experience in winning a title, both having won a Grade 2 tournament. Both players look like they are capable of winning the title, and similarly to the girls tournament, everything could happen. Both tournaments are currently showing that there is no clear favorite for the upcoming Roland Garros tournament, because it seems like many players are capable of beating each other and there are no players who are clearly head and shoulders above the rest. Exciting times for sure. Quarterfinal boys results Trofeo Bonfiglio: Federico Gaio (ITA) d. Henri Laaksonen (FIN) 7-6(6) 6-4 Andrea Collarini (ARG,4) d.
