It was already a long time coming, but the second Grade A tournament of the year, the Trofeo Bonfiglio, brought forth two surprising winners. Italian fans were left disappointed by the loss of their compatriot Federico Gaio to Argentinian Facundo Arguello and Sloane Stephens proved that American players can definitely master claycourt tennis by defeating Serbian Aleksandra Krunic. 16-year old Arguello, who had to sit on the sidelines while his countrymen Velotti and Collarini came close to Junior Davis Cup success last year, made a big step into the limelight of Junior tennis by defeating Italian Federico Gaio in the Trofeo Bonfiglio final. Arguello secured his first break in the first set to take a 3-2 lead, after which he did not lose serve any more to capture the set by 6-4. A tired-looking Gaio regained his focus in the second and managed to secure it with some strong return games: 6-2. In the third game of the final set it was advantage to Arguello again, who did not relinquish his advantage anymore to conquer his first Grade A title: 6-3. This title already brings Arguello one step closer to becoming the top Argentinian in the Junior rankings: the 250 points gained from this victory will help him surpass his much lauded compatriot Agustin Velotti, who currently ranks 13th. Runner up Gaio also makes a considerable climb up the rankings, rising from 46th to somewhere just outside the top 20. Girls winner Sloane Stephens already showed that she is more than capable of causing problems on clay by defeating top seed Laura Robson in the quarterfinals and then taking out her countrywoman Christina McHale with relative ease. In the final Stephens also showed that she should be considered a dangerous player for the Roland Garros title, by defeating Serbian Aleksandra Krunic relatively easily. After a first set in which Stephens just edged it 6-4, in the second set she was in full control of the match, finishing off her opponent by 6-2. The title catapults Stephens straight into the top 15, with a previous career high of 59th. Losing finalist Krunic also boosts her ranking considerably, rising from 31st to just inside the top 20.
