British hopes dashed
Wednesday, 01 July 2009
ImageWith only 2 players remaining in the boys and girls draw British hopes had gotten slimmer and slimmer and after the third round, all hopes were gone. The loss of British boy Tom Farquharson to 3rd seed Bernard Tomic was hardly surprising; the defeat of 2nd seed Laura Robson will have sent shockwaves through the girls draw. Robson had to fight off solidly playing Dutch girl Quirine Lemoine and a back spasm, which seemed to worsen as the match wore on.

Robson fought hard for every point, with the crowd on her back, but failed to really trouble Lemoine in the first set. In the second set Robson fought hard behind her own strong serve, despite her obvious discomfort. After managing to win the second set 6-4 behind one single break, it even looked like she was going to pull off the impossible. But Lemoine fought herself back into the match, forging an early break.

Robson immediately fought back with a spirited display behind some strong ground strokes and the loud support of her countrymen. But the crowd was immediately quieted down again by another break from a solidly playing Lemoine. At 5-3 and 0-40 on Robson’s serve, all seemed to be over for the 15-year old Brit. But once again she dug a little deeper, profited from some nervous shots by Lemoine and managed to hold serve to 5-4. Having a chance to serve the match out, jitters once again got the better of Lemoine, with Robson now completely back in the contest at 5-5. It now seemed that proceedings were going Robson’s way, as she held serve to 5-6.

But Lemoine showed some incredible mental fortitude by holding serve and then going on to break Robson one more time to once again get the chance to serve it out. This time Lemoine managed to maintain the solid play that had gotten her in this position, serving out the match to complete the shocker of this Junior Wimbledon at 8-6 in the third set. Lemoine will be up against 6th seed Timea Babos of Hungary, where she will get a chance to prove that she is not just a one hit wonder.

Meanwhile top seed Kristina Mladenovic went about her business without remorse, dispensing of Japan’s Akiko Omae in straight sets. 4th seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn quite easily survived what could have been a tricky encounter against 13th seed Tamaryn Hendler. The road to another Wimbledon final seems to be opening up for Lertcheewakarn, who meets 11th seed Silvia Njiric in the next round. Mladenovic will face a tough challenge in her quarterfinal against 7th seed Sloane Stephens, after which the road to the final seems to be open, since the winner of this encounter would await the winner of the match between two unseeded players, Zsofia Susanyi of Hungary and Miyabi Inoue of Japan.

In the boys tournament top seed Daniel Berta was, perhaps not that surprisingly, defeated by service cannon Alexander Domijan. Domijan never gave Berta much of a chance, not facing a single breakpoint and converting 3 out of 12 himself. The next opponent will be a repeat of the Roehampton semifinals, where Domijan also faced later winner Devin Britton. Britton has really proven why he loves the grass so much, as he put in another dominating display against Brazilian Tiago Fernandes. Despite strong play by the Brazilian, the serve of Britton proved to be the dominant force in the match, as he pounded down 15 aces and did not lose a single point when his first serve went in.

3rd seed Bernard Tomic also kept his hopes of winning his first Wimbledon alive and he will meet 9th seed Dominik Schulz in the next round, the player he lost to at the Roland Garros Junior tournament. The third quarterfinal is between 4th seed Agustin Velotti and Jordan Cox and the last quarterfinal is an encounter between unseeded players Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia and Dino Marcan of Croatia, the winner of the Roland Garros Junior doubles title.
