| Britton keeps firing in Britain |
| Thursday, 02 July 2009 | |
American Devin Britton continued his devastating form on grass with another victory over compatriot Alexander Domijan. Britton had to overcome the loss of the first set against Domijan, but battled himself back behind his strong serve and volley game. In the semifinals Britton will be facing doubles partner Jordan Cox, who outlasted 4th seeded Argentinian Agustin Velotti. 3rd seed Bernard Tomic also needed three sets to overcome 9th seed Dominik Schulz, while his upcoming opponent Andrey Kuznetsov was the only player to win in straight sets against Croatian Dino Marcan. The match between Britton and Domijan showcased the most powerful weapons of both players, Britton with his strong first and second serve and excellent volleys and Domijan with his booming serve and powerful forehand. There was not a single breakpoint in the first set, inevitably leading to a tie-break. In the tie-break Britton’s trusty serve stuttered somewhat and Domijan profited without any hesitation, easily taking the tie-break 7-2. In the second set there were also few breakpoints, each player receiving one. Britton managed to serve away Domijan’s breakpoint and managed to convert his only breakpoint at 4-3 up, to serve out the set to 6-3. The third set saw an early breakthrough for Britton, one that he had to hold on to tenaciously, facing 4 breakpoints, but overcoming them all with strong serving and volleying. It proved to be the undoing of Domijan, with Britton serving out a quick-fire match 6-4 in the final set. Looking at this match, there is no doubt that both these players would be able to hold their own on Wimbledon at the ATP level, combining for 90 winners against only 32 unforced errors and serves of up to 202 kmh. Britton’s next opponent is doubles partner Jordan Cox, who overcame a second set loss against Argentinian Agustin Velotti to book his first spot in a Junior Grand Slam semifinal. Aussie Bernard Tomic now has a chance to improve on his semifinal spot at Wimbledon next year, after overcoming a second set loss against German Dominik Schulz, a set that Tomic really should have won considering the 8 breakpoints that he failed to convert against 1 that Schulz did convert. Tomic will be facing an in-form opponent in Russian Andrey Kuznetsov, who was quite clearly the stronger player in a straight sets victory against Croatian Dino Marcan. Many were also expecting a tough match for girls top seed Kristina Mladenovic against 7th seed Sloane Stephens, but saw nothing but a one-sided match. Mladenovic profited from an error strewn performance by Stephens, who produced a total of 24 unforced errors against 3 winners, leaving to a 6-1 6-0 victory for Mladenovic. Mladenovic’ next opponent is Japanese 17-year old Miyabi Inoue, who overcame Hungarian Zsofia Susanyi 7-5 in the third set. 4th seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn put in another strong performance against 11th seeded Croatian Silvia Njiric. Lertcheewakarn dominated off the ground, facing most of her problems behind her first serve, which still needs a lot of improvement if she ever wants to make it big on the WTA tour. Lertcheewakarn faced a total of 7 break points and was broken 3 times and with a first serve percentage of 74% she won only 55% percent of the points behind her first serve. Lertcheewakarn’s next opponent is 6th seeded Hungarian Timea Babos. Babos overcame a resounding 6-2 first set loss against Dutch upset girl Quirine Lemoine. The clear difference between both players was the strong serve of Babos who won 87% percent of the points behind her first serve in the second and third set, which she won 6-1 6-4. This will be Babos’ first appearance in a Junior Grand Slam semifinal. Quarterfinal boys results Wimbledon: Devin Britton (USA) d. Alexander Domijan (USA) 6-7(2) 6-3 6-4 Jordan Cox (USA) d.
