| Lertcheewakarn closes in on retribution |
| Friday, 03 July 2009 | |
The British public could be forgiven for forgetting about the finalist of last year’s Wimbledon Junior, Noppawan Lertcheewakarn. The reigning Junior World Champion from Thailand seemed to be little more than an extra in the emergence of Laura Robson. This time Lertcheewakarn is one step away from some well deserved recognition, as she has the chance to capture her first Junior Grand Slam.6th seed Timea Babos proved to be very little challenge, as Lertcheewakarn crushed an uncomfortable opponent without any remorse for the loss of only 2 games. The only player standing in Lertcheewakarn’s way to the title is now top seed Kristina Mladenovic. Mladenovic also hurried into the final, losing only 3 games against Japan’s Miyabi Inoue. Mladenovic managed to beat Lertcheewakarn quite easily at Roehampton last week, so the Thai 17-year old knows she has her work cut out for her. The boys tournament has proven to be in keeping with the rest of the Junior season, surprise after surprise. After last week’s victory at Roehampton and having overtaken the seemingly most challenging hurdle in compatriot Alexander Domijan, Devin Britton seemed to be on his way to the Wimbledon title. But there was still his doubles partner, Jordan Cox, to overcome. Cox fought valiantly into the final, repairing a break early and then maintaining the upper hand in the match. Britton managed to narrowly hold serve time after time, but faced his first three match points at 14-13 down. Britton saved all three with some courageous play, narrowly coming back to 14-14. At 15-14 Cox got another bite at the apple and this time he was on to Britton’s serve, returning the ball at his feet and forcing a volley low into the net: 16-14 Cox. Cox faces another surprising finalist in Russian Andrey Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov, who actually has the highest senior ranking besides Bernard Tomic at 557, defeated the Australian in straight sets, finishing off the match at 8-6 in the second set tie-break after an epic rally that lasted several minutes. The Russian, who actually favors clay but lost in the Roland Garros second round, has not lost a set since dropping the first in his first round match against Austrian Tristan Samuel Weissborn. Neither Cox nor Kuznetsov have any experience at playing a Junior Grand Slam final, so nerves will prove to be an important factor, in a match that has a Wimbledon Junior title up for grabs. Semifinal boys results Wimbledon: Jordan Cox (USA) d. Devin Britton (USA) 6-3 6-7(7) 16-14 Andrey Kuznetsov (RUS) d.
