Noppawan Lertcheewakarn writes Thai history at WimbledonNoppawan Lertcheewakarn made Thai history by becoming the first Junior from her country to capture a Junior Grand Slam singles title by defeating French top seed Kristina Mladenovic. Lertcheewakarn had to come back from the disappointment of a first set loss and possibly another runner up spot, but recovered admirably to win the Junior Grand Slam that was sorely missing in the year that she became Junior World Champion.

Mladenovic dominated the first set with her impressive serve, breaking Lertcheewakarn at the first time of asking for a 2-0 lead. Lertcheewakarn immediately broke back with her powerful double-fisted groundstrokes, only to face another 4 breakpoints in the fifth game, which she all saved, and then another at 4-3 down. A missed backhand gave Mladenovic a 5-3 lead, after which she served it out with an ace for a 6-3 first set win.

It looked to be all over in the second set when Mladenovic continued to profit from the weakness of Lertcheewakarn’s serve for a 2-1 lead. But again Lertcheewakarn fought back valiantly, breaking straight back and then breaking against at 4-3 for a chance to serve out the second set. Lertcheewakarn served out the set to 6-3 and managed to hold her strong form in the final set, taking a quick 4-0 lead.

Both girls held serve to 5-1, after which Lertcheewakarn got her first chance to win the title on Mladenovic’s serve. Lertcheewakarn did not need to do much to convert it, as Mladenovic put her backhand into the net. Lertcheewakarn rejoiced, having shown to the doubters that she was indeed capable of winning a Junior Grand Slam and also securing a wildcard into the main draw of next year’s Wimbledon Championships.

Another chapter in the rivalry between Lertcheewakarn and Mladenovic will be coming up very soon, with both players facing off for the Junior number 1 position in the Girls doubles final. Lertcheewakarn will be joined by her Australian partner Sally Peers and Mladenovic will be partnered by Croatian Silvia Njiric.
