The organizers of the Air Berlin German Juniors must have been delighted with the winners of their tournament. In the boys tournament 2nd seed Kevin Krawietz continued his Wimbledon Junior doubles success by hoisting another trophy after defeating compatriot Richard Becker. In the girls tournament 4th seed Anna Lena Friedsam continued her quick rise up the rankings with her first Grade 1 title by defeating another young prodigy in Russian Yulia Putintseva. Krawietz showed some rampant form in this tournament, only losing focus twice, but generally finishing off his matches without much trouble. The German has been steadily moving up the Junior rankings this year, in the shadow of countrymen Dominik Schulz and Richard Becker. Krawietz burst into the limelight with a victory at the Grade 1 Offenbach/Main tournament on clay just before Wimbledon, defeating compatriot Richard Becker with considerable ease. Krawietz did reasonably at the Gerry Weber Open and Wimbledon singles, reaching the second round. The doubles tournament was where Krawietz first showed his face to the general public, however, making a run to the title with French partner Pierre Hugues Herbert. At the German Juniors Richard Becker was once again standing in the way of a Grade 1 title for Krawietz, who allowed Becker only one more game than their previous meeting: 6-2 6-2. Krawietz now claims himself a spot in the top 10, by jumping into 10th position, becoming the top ranked Junior from his country. The same accounts for Friedsam who leapfrogged compatriot Sina Haas to become the top ranked female Junior from Germany. Friedsam came into this tournament in top form, losing only 1 contest in 16 matches. The only loss came against Romanian Cristina Dinu in the final of the Offenbach/Main tournament. Besides that, Friedsam captured 2 Grade 2 titles and including the runner up spot at the Offenbach/Main tournament, she was suddenly inside the top 100 at 71. Friedsam retained her rampant form in the early stages of the tournament, not losing a single set until the semifinals with an average loss of 3 games per match. Semifinal opponent Natalija Kostic of Serbia did not roll over so easily, however, giving Friedsam a second set fright, but ultimately the German was the better of the two prevailing 6-1 in the third set. Against 14-year old Russian Yulia Putintseva the final proved another interesting challenge, as the Russian managed to capture the first set. But Friedsam regained her composure and confidence very quickly, racking up the second and third set 6-2 6-3 to capture her first Grade 1 title. All of a sudden Friedsam has risen into the top 30 of the Junior rankings at 28th position, a position that she will surely be able to improve even further in the upcoming tournaments.
