Diez and Dabija crowned European Junior ChampionsThe first Junior tournament that Spaniard Steven Diez played in his career immediately yielded success. Diez had mostly been plying his trade on the ATP tour, trying to climb the senior rankings. His one-time appearance on the Junior scene in the final of the European Junior Championships against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, was a tough but successful one. Diez was joined in the winner’s circle by another player who mostly plays with the seniors, Romanian Elora Dabija. Dabija defeated 9th seed Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands.

Recently Diez has been starting to come to grips with the ATP tour, reaching the quarterfinals of a Challenger at the start of this month and then winning a future in the week after that. This has helped Diez scale the ATP rankings quickly, already reaching 637th. In these European Junior Championships Diez also showed his worth, easily making his way through the early stages into the semifinals. His semifinal encounter with top seed Daniel Berta proved to be a tough one, as the Spaniard had to overcome a 6-1 first set loss. But Diez clawed his way back into the match, a quality he also needed in the final against Fucsovics. The surprising finalist from Hungary made Diez work hard, going toe to toe with his opponent all match long. They split the first 2 sets 6-4 4-6 and kept slugging it out in the final set. Diez only managed to make the telling break in the final stages of the set, taking the last set 7-5. After this Diez will most likely go back to playing Futures in his native Spain again, whereas Fucsovics will receive a considerable boost to his point total to move him further up the Junior rankings.

Dabija also had very little Junior activity, only playing the Roland Garros Junior tournament this year, and losing in the first round to Fatma Al Nabhani of Oman. Dabija had far greater success on the WTA tour, reaching the latter stages of several $ 10.000 tournaments and even reaching the semifinals of a $ 50.000 tournament in the week before the European Junior Championships. Dabija continued to cruise, defeating every opponent on her way to the final in straight sets and most notably 2nd seed Timea Babos by 6-1 6-3. Dabija faced surprising Duth girl Richel Hogenkamp, who defeated top seed Kristina Mladenovic in the semifinals. Hogenkamp proved to be worth her spot in the final, pushing Dabija all the way. Dabija needed a 6-4 third set win to capture her first, and most likely only, Junior title. Runner up Hogenkamp will rise further up the rankings, somewhere inside the Junior top 20.
