Thiem and Mestach win Colombian titlesBelgian An Sophie Mestach continued a very successful run in the COSAT junior tennis circuit by winning her second Grade 1 in the series in Colombia. She was joined in the winners circle by surprising boys 7th seed Dominic Thiem of Austria, who overcame unseeded Paraguayan Diego Galeano in the final.

Thiem showed some excellent form on his way to the title, not losing a single set. Top seed Mate Zsiga, winner of last week’s Copa Gatorade, did not prove much of a challenge in the quarterfinals, going down 6-4 6-2. The only player to push Thiem to a tie-break was surprising finalist Diego Galeano of Paraguay. The tie-break was a formality, however, going to Thiem at 7-1. Thiem then easily brought the title home, winning the second set 6-2. After reaching the quarterfinals at the Copa Yucatan last year, this title means the breakthrough of the 16 year old Austrian. Thiem is going to improve his ranking to 52nd, whereas runner up Galeano will rise into 124th position.

Like Thiem Mestach didn’t drop a single set on her way to her second Grade 1 title in 3 weeks. The Belgian easily made her way to the final, where she encountered a little more resistance from 3rd seed Veronica Cepede-Royg. Mestach only found the breakthrough at 6-5 in the first set and also managed one break in the second set to win it 6-4. This title brings Mestach to the brink of the top 10 into 12th position, whereas Cepede will move into 22nd position, just short of her career high 16th.
