Pliskova and Fernandes win Australian OpenBefore the tournament few would have predicted Brazilian Tiago Fernandes as the winner of the Australian Open Junior tournament. The Brazilian upset all the odds, however, beating Aussie-to-be Sean Berman in straight sets in the final. Fernandes just edged Berman in both sets, showing a greater sense of maturity, having just turned 17. In the girls final Laura Robson once again had to surrender the title to a significantly older opponent in Czech 6th seed Karolina Pliskova.

Fernandes had already beaten several in-form opponents like 2nd seed Gianni Mina and 4th seed Mitchell Frank. Both players managed to take one set from the Brazilian, but each time Fernandes managed to dig deep and bring home the final set. In the final Sean Berman, soon to receive the Australian nationality, seemed to suffer more from the pressure from his home fans, just coming up short in the first set, losing it 7-5. In the second set Fernandes was clearly the stronger player, ending the match at 6-3 to grab his first Grade A title. Fernandes favourite service is clay, but the Brazilian has already shown in previous tournament that he is more than capable on hardcourt, by reaching the quarterfinals of last year’s US Open. This title catapults Fernandes straight into the top 10 in 3rd position, on equal points with the player he beat in the semifinals, Gianni Mina. Finalist Sean Berman moves straight into the top 100 at number 65, having previously been ranked outside the top 100.

Karolina Pliskova showed that between her and her sister Kristyna, she is without a doubt the better player. Karolina boasts a far superior ranking at 220 compared to 471 for Kristyna and at the Australian Open Junior tournament the difference between the twin sisters was very clear. Kristyna was still soundly beaten by Laura Robson in the semifinals, but the roles were reversed when Robson faced off against Karolina. Karolina Pliskova clearly won the first set at 6-1 and was on her way to the title at 5-3 in the second. At this point Robson staged a comeback, forging a tie-break in which she took a 4-1 lead. Karolina Pliskova was not to be held from her title, though, as she managed to fight back and close out the match in the tie-break: 7-5. This match must have given a sense of déjà-vu to Laura Robson, as the Brit also lost the final of last year’s Australian Open Junior tournament, to Russian Ksenia Pervak. Despite that, there is no denying the promise that Robson still carries in her, as she only recently turned 16 and still has a lot to learn. Pliskova, having previously been ranking outside the top 1000, now finds herself straight into 25th position in the junior rankings, whereas Robson remains in 32nd, retaining her points gained from last year.
