Of the 3 eligible Juniors on display in the first round of Wimbledon, 31st seed Caroline Wozniacki and Sorana Cirstea made it through. Austrian Tamira Paszek only just came up short against 20th seed Francesca Schiavone.
Wozniacki had a very easy first set in her match against Eva Hrdinova, saving only 1 breakpoint and making both her break chances herself. The second set seemed to be progressing even easier, again making 2 out of 2 breakpoints, racing to a 3-0 lead. But with 2 breaks back, Hrdinova came right back into the match to even lead at 5-4. Hrdinova then got her first chance to level the match with one breakpoint, but she had no such luck: 5-5. Immediately Wozniacki grabbed control of the match, this time converting her second chance of a break. There were no more problems for the 31st seed, as she served out the match to love. In the next round Wozniacki will face Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak, a player that she lost to twice 3 years ago, one defeat at the Australian Open Juniors. Sorana Cirstea fought out a fairly evenly matched battle with Russian Ekaterina Bychkova in the first set. Bychkova failed to convert on a break chance at 1-0 up, only for Cirstea to go on and convert her only breakpoint at 3-3. Cirstea got a chance for another break at 5-3, but this time it was saved by her opponent. Cirstea showed no nerves, however, easily serving out the set for 6-4. The second set followed the pattern of the first set, with another break for Cirstea at 3-3. Bychkova again got chances to break again and finish the match at 5-3, but again Bychkova held firm. But, just like the first set, Cirstea showed no nerves in serving it out, immediately converting her first match point for a straightforward 6-4 6-4 win. In her next match Cirstea will be up against 16th seed Victoria Azarenka, which will give her a chance to get some payback for her double bagel loss at the French Open. Finally Tamira Paszek came out firing in her unfinished match from yesterday, breaking Schiavone at 6-5 up in the second set, after the Italian committed an untimely backhand error. The final set proved to be a topsy-turvy affair, first Schiavone breaking at 3-3, then Paszek breaking back to 4-4. Schiavone broke again at 5-5, only for Paszek to break back again. Schiavone finally got the breakthrough she needed at 8-8 with a brilliant volley winner and then serving strongly to win the final set 10-8. Next up for Schiavone will be Spaniard Anabel Medina-Garrigues. First round ladies results Wimbledon: Caroline Wozniacki (DEN,31) d. Eva Hrdinova (CZE) 6-2 7-5 Sorana Cirstea (ROU) d.
