Wimbledon Junior Watch: Young comes up short
Tuesday, 24 June 2008
With a great chance to reach the second round of a Grand Slam besides the US Open, Donald Young fell just short. Against Jesse Levine, a player that Young beat 4 times in the past, the American lost in 4 sets.

The first set started off in favor of Levine, as the qualifier grabbed an early break for a 3-0 lead. Young fought back admirably, though, grabbing 2 breaks in a row for a 5-3 lead, only to serve it out for a 6-4 first set win. An early break in the second set and suddenly Young looked to be on his way towards the second round. However, this was when Levine played his best tennis, constantly rushing to the net and forcing Young to make tough choices. Break after break followed, 3 in total, for a 6-2 second set win for Levine.

In the third set it was again Young who took an early advantage at 2-0, but again Levine came right back, racking up 5 games in a row for a 5-2 lead. Young took one service game of his own, after which Levine served it out for a 6-3 third set win. In the final set 2 consecutive breaks and a 3-0 lead and Young looked beaten. At this point Young showed some amazing mental capability to peg back 2 breaks and be right in the thick of things at 4-3 up. But once again Levine proved to be the stronger player when it mattered, notching another break at 4-4, converting his 9th break in total. Levine then only needed 2 match points to finish off last year’s Wimbledon Junior winner. Levine was deserving of the victory, converting 9 of his 12 breakpoints and also making 28 points from 35 approaches to the net. Levine’s next opponent will be unseeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer, who defeated 26th seed Ivan Ljubicic in the first round.

First round gentlemen’s result Wimbledon:

Jesse Levine (USA) d. Donald Young (USA) 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-4
